Cotton supplies in China face structural problem as the textile industry needs more high quality cotton, according to Wang Tiankai, president of the China National Textile & Apparel Council (CNTAC) on Tuesday.
On the surface, China still has 10 million metric tons (tonnes) of reserved cotton in hand. Traditionally, China pays more attention to quantity and less to quality when buying cotton for state reserves.
As the domestic textile industry has shifted focus to the high-end orientation, it requires more high quality cotton and reduces its demand for low quality cotton, said Wang.
High quality cotton consumption in China accounts for more than 50 percent of the total each year. Measured by the 7 million tonnes of cotton consumption each year, the country needs to consume at least 3.5 million tonnes of high quality cotton annually, Wang added.
