Internet economy accounts for 7pct of China's GDP in 2014, CNNIC

Internet economy took up an increasing share in China's gross domestic product over the past few years and the percentage reached seven percent in 2014, according to China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

The institute released on Thursday the 10 highlights of China's Internet development from 2011 to 2015 and stated the accomplishments of China's Internet industry during the period.

The 10 highlights are: First, fundamental environment of Internet improved fully. During the 2011-2015 period, China has incipiently constructed fast, convenient Internet environment with wider network coverage, richer basic network resources, and higher resource quality.

Secondly, the era of mobile Internet started. During the 2011-2015 period, mobile Internet developed swiftly and took the lead in 'the third wave' of China's Internet development; mobile phone overtook computer and become the primary Internet accessing terminal of Chinese netizens.

Thirdly, the space of network became cleaner. During the 2011-2015 period, positive information was the mainstream on the Internet and objectionable information lessened considerably.

Fourthly, Internet became a significant driving force of China's economic development. During the 2011-2015 period, Internet made greater contribution to China's economic growth. Internet economy took up an increasing share in China's gross domestic product over the past few years and the percentage reached seven percent in 2014; the scale of online retail transaction ranked the top across the world; and Internet-driven electronics and information industries showed rapid growth.

Fifthly, Internet companies grew robustly. During the 2011-2015 period, market value of Chinese Internet companies increased considerably. The number of listed Chinese Internet-concept enterprises totaled 328, including 61 listed in the U.S. stock market, 209 listed in the A-share market; and 55 listed in Hong Kong stock market, with their market values reaching 7.85 trillion yuan, equaling to 25.6 percent of China's stock markets' total.

Sixthly, the development of Internet benefited people's living. During the 2011-2015 period, the development of Internet brought great convenience to people's living as it simplified the procedure of public services and facilitated equality of resources.

Seventhly, Internet culture developed prosperously. During the 2011-2015 period, the variety and number of Internet products both increased significantly. The user base of Internet video, Internet literature, and Internet games totaled 481 million, rising 100 million from the 2006-2010 period.

Eighthly, the Internet helped improve modernization of China's state governance system and capacity. During the 2011-2015 period, the Internet helped accelerate the construction of 'sunlight government', boost the construction of 'service-oriented government', and promote the construction of 'government by laws'.

Ninthly, the progress of cyberspace legalization advanced rapidly. During the 2011-2015 period, the progress of network legislation accelerated considerably and the enforcement of network content supervision was efficient.

Tenthly, International communication on the basis of Internet deepened further. During the 2011-2015 period, China enhanced international communication and cooperation in the field of Internet, took a proactive role in participating in global Internet governance, and elaborated the 'proposition of China' for the first time. The voice and influence of China increased significantly in the international community.
