China ended the history of long dependence on optical fiber imports in 2014, according to a recent forum. In 2014, China's optical fiber production capacity reached 220 million kilometers, said Zhu Ronghua, a senior official of the China Electronic Components Association.
China's annual capacity of optical fiber pre-form and optical fiber core reached 155 million kilometers and 170 million kilometers, respectively, last year.
The country boasts nearly hundreds of optical fiber cable, equipment manufacturing and materials production enterprises whose products can totally meet the domestic demand and be exported, Zhu added.
Before 2000, the majority of optical fibers used in China came from overseas. Of the homegrown optical fiber, most were even produced by imported fiber pre-forms.
But now, China has made great progress in the optical fiber production with the optical fiber categories and technical indicators on a par with the international level, said Cui Genliang, chairman of Hengtong Group, a leading optical fiber producer in China.
