Select sports and economic news stories published by Xinhua News Agency will now be completed by a computer program after a new project was launched ahead of its 84th anniversary on Saturday.

The project is one of several editing reforms being launched and aims to save manpower and increase efficiency and accuracy.

It is part of the agency's big data exploration during the Internet era. First tested during last month's coverage of the Chinese Football Association's Super League, the program is capable of writing data news on result bulletins and rankings in both Chinese and English, said Zhou Jie, an executive of Xinhua Sports News Desk. It can also report on the stock market, company earnings, foreign exchange and other number-based stories, according to Li Wei of China Securities, a Xinhua-affiliated economic newspaper.
