China's telecom giants to commercialize VoLTE in 2016-2017

China Mobile (CHL.NYSE; 00941.HK), China Unicom (CHU.NYSE; 00762.HK; 600050.SH) and China Telecom (CHA.NYSE; 00728.HK) will commence commercial operation of their voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services in 2016-2017, the Xinhua-run cnstock.com reported.

Industry insiders believe that the VoLTE technology will enable telecom operators to provide diversified voice applications with more abundant contents than narrow-band voice business. China's largest telecom operator China Mobile plans to develop 30 million VoLTE customers in 2016, said the company's vice president Sha Yuejia.

In the first half of next year, the company will implement preferential policies for VoLTE customers and will achieve VoLTE commercialization in 260 cities by end-June. China Unicom plans to start trial commercialization of VoLTE in some cities by the end of this year and start nationwide trial next year. China Telecom will start large-scale network construction and testing for VoLTE in 2016 and achieve VoLTE commercialization by the end of 2017.
