The shipment of 3D printers in the Chinese market is expected to top 160,000 units in 2016, outperforming the U.S. market, said Mo Minyi, an analyst at market research firm IDC, on Tuesday.
But with regard to market revenue, the U.S. market will keep its leading position. The growth of China's 3D printer market in the coming five years will be primarily driven by the inexpensive desktop 3D printers, while the U.S. market attaches greater significance to industrial application and corporate users are inclined to buy expensive high-end 3D printers.
3D printing has been taken as a major booster for the 'Made in China 2015' strategy and the sales volume of 3D printers started to grow from 2014, when the shipment exceeded 34,000 sets. IDC predicts that the shipment in 2015 will grow over 120 percent year on year to 77,000 sets.
Desktop 3D printers account for over 90 percent of China's 3D printer market, the gap in price between desktop 3D printers and professional 3D printers is large - market revenue of professional 3D printers takes up 78 percent of the 3D printer market's total.
IDC predicts that China's overall 3D printer market will keep rapid growth and the compound growth rate will be 43 percent by 2020 with the shipment exceeding 440,000 sets.
