China has issued more than 13.5 billion smart IC cards so far, Zhang Qi, director of the State Coordinating and Leading Group Office of Golden Card Project, said on Tuesday at the 18th National Application Working Conference of the State Golden Card Project.

Zhang said among the 13.5 billion smart IC cards were nearly six billion telecom smart IC cards, 2.4 billion bank IC cards, 1.4 billion second-generation identity cards, 860 million social security cards, and nearly 750 million urban transportation cards and other public affair payment cards.

Chen Ying, deputy director of Information and Software Service Department under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said the golden card project has played a stimulus role in boosting the development of China's information industry and created China's indigenous smart card industry.

Statistics released by the coordinating and leading group office show that the number of China's smart card manufacturing companies with annual revenue in excess of 20 million yuan has reached 100 and China's IC card industry realized sales revenue of 13.3 billion yuan in 2014, up 13.6 percent year on year.
