Spanish and Chinese telecommunications giants Telefonica and Huawei on Wednesday announced an agreement at the Mobile World Congress here to promote the development of digital home services in Latin America.
The digital home experience -- designed jointly by the two companies -- allows manufacturers in the internet of things to integrate their various products. It has been calculated that by 2020, around 245 million homes will have at least one digital home product or service.
"Our objective is to offer a simple and unique digital home experience. Through their smartphones our clients can be up to date with what happens in their homes and interact with a series of connected items. We think it will help them in their daily lives," said Michael Duncan, president of Telefonica's global consumer unit.
Haixu Ma, president of Huawei's core network line, said the digital home sector was "becoming a new source of growth for operators." "We are certain our platform will offer a differential solution to Telefonica's clients. We have worked with Telefonica in the region for many years and it is a logical step for us to join forces in this field," he added.
