China will speed up its research and strengthen government support on fundamental and critical technologies, the Economic Information Daily reported on Monday.
According to the report, China was expected to promote breakthroughs in information technologies and encourage fundamental research in this field to accelerate related applications in practice.
China has always emphasized its digital economy. Many beneficial policies have been issued to develop its big data, cloud computing, the internet of things (IoT), 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics among others.
Increasing productivity through new internet-based technologies is at the center of the development of China's digital economy, and the country is accelerating its pace in digitalizing its manufacturing, agriculture, and service sectors.
The first Digital China Summit held from Apr 22 to 24 released a report on China's development on its digital economy, showing that in 2017, the country's digital economy was valued at RMB 27.2 trillion, up by 20.3 percent year-on-year, taking up 32.9 percent of the country's GDP.
Shang Bing, chairman of China Mobile Communications, said that the company would accelerate its research and development of critical technologies like big data and artificial intelligence. Moreover, it would enhance its leading role in the 5G industry and forge cross-industry applications.
"The whole world is becoming increasingly digital with all-round connections. In the future, technological breakthroughs in 5G, IoT, cloud computing and AI would bring prosperity to all industries, and further drive both the digital and real economy," said Liang Hua, chairman of Huawei.
An official from China's internet regulators said that a key problem for the government to solve was the sharing and utilization of data resources, and the government would speed up the sharing as well as opening-up of its public information resources.
