A data center belonging to Chinese internet giant Tencent began trial operation in southwest China's Guizhou Province Monday.

Pony Ma, CEO of Tencent, said the Qixing center will store the company's most important data in the future.

The core facilities have been installed inside inconspicuous caves tucked away in mountains in Gui'an New Area, and no staff are required during day-to-day operations.

Artificial intelligence technology such as facial recognition and security robots have been adopted to secure the data center.

Zhong Yuanhe, director of the data center, said advanced building technologies were used to shorten the construction time.

The Qixing data center covers an area of about 513,000 square meters, with its tunnel area exceeding 30,000 square meters. It is designed as a green, efficient backup for disaster recovery.
