LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The skyrocketing popularity of streaming services and wireless earbuds, along with 5G connectivity and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled devices, will drive growth for the U.S. consumer tech industry to a record 422 billion U.S. dollars in retail revenues in 2020, according to a report released Monday by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), organizer of the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

The figure is up nearly 4 percent from last year, according to the report released on the eve of the CES 2020 in Las Vegas.

The digital health category is projected to sell 64 million devices and total 10 billion dollars this year. Spending on software and streaming services is expected to reach a new high of 81.2 billion dollars, according to the report.

Top revenue categories include smart phones, laptops, TVs and in-vehicle technologies, it said.

"More and more consumers are embracing the faster connectivity, advanced intelligence and seemingly infinite content that technology offers today - pushing consumer technology industry revenues toward another record-setting year in 2020," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the CTA.

"We'll see advancements in 5G connectivity and AI play out across the CES 2020 show floor this week - from digital health to self-driving vehicles and smart homes - vital technologies that are changing our lives for the better," he added.

The CTA's twice yearly report on U.S. consumer technology sales and forecasts reflects U.S. factory sales-to-dealers for over 300 consumer tech products and related software and services.

More than 4,500 exhibitors will launch nearly 20,000 new transformative tech products at the CES 2020, encompassing 5G connectivity, AI, augmented and virtual reality, smart cities and resilience, sports, robotics and more, according to the CTA.
