A system offering predictions for the ideal spring tea plucking period has been launched in east China's Zhejiang Province, the Science and Technology Daily reported Monday.
From January to February this year, Zhejiang Province witnessed higher temperatures than usual and average rainfall, while the temperature in March is also estimated to be higher than usual, said the newspaper.
Thus the harvesting period of some tea species in some regions of the province will be earlier than usual this year, according to the system.
Researchers collected and analyzed data on temperature, annual tea plucking time and questionnaires for tea growers to figure out the best plucking period of spring tea this year.
Their data can maintain a prediction accuracy of within three days.
Zhejiang has remarkable tea production. In 2018, the province had more than 200,000 hectares of tea plantations, with a yield of 186,000 tonnes and an output value of 19 billion yuan (about 2.68 billion U.S. dollars).
Big data is expected to assist the monitoring of tea growth, output and quality, as well as issue disaster warnings.
