China's social media giant WeChat daily logins hit 1.09 bln

BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- WeChat or Wexin in Chinese, popular communication and social media platform in China, has seen 1.09 billion users access the app every day, according to the Tencent WeChat Team.

The app also attracts 780 million users to use its "Moment" function, 120 million share their daily life in the "Moment", and 360 million users read articles and gain information from the app, said Zhang Xiaolong, Senior Executive Vice President of Tencent.

Daily active users of WeChat mini-programs or mini-apps surpass 400 million on average annually, said the WeChat team.

In 2020, the gross merchandise volume on the mini-programs more than doubled from that in 2019, and the transaction value per capita surged 67 percent year on year.

WeChat was launched in 2011 and owned by the Chinese tech behemoth Tencent. It was initiated as a messaging app, then developed into a multi-functional social media platform of messaging, social media and mobile payment.
