BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news in China.

SPACE-BRED SEEDS

Chinese researchers have commenced breeding experiments on 12,000 seeds that were bred inside the Shenzhou-13 crewed spaceship in space for six months.

The seeds, including alfalfa, oats and fungi, were selected by multiple research institutions last year. They were brought back to Earth by the Shenzhou-13 on April 16.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Long-term exposure to PM2.5 air pollution increases the risk of cognitive decline and may prematurely result in Alzheimer's disease, according to a new scientific study.

The study, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, revealed that long-term exposure to PM2.5 resulted in an increased risk of cognitive decline, which may be partly explained by brain amyloid accumulation indicative of increased Alzheimer's disease risk.

FOREST STUDY

Chinese researchers have revealed that multispecies planting in forests promotes the growth of trees compared with single-species planting, said a study paper published in the journal Science.

They found that the average tree height, diameter at breast height and aboveground biomass in multispecies sites were 5.4 percent, 6.8 percent and 25.5 percent, respectively, higher compared with that of monocultural.

The positive effects were mainly the result of interspecific complementarity and were modulated by differences in leaf lifespan, stand age, planting density and temperature.
