Overall 27 key water conservancy programs have started construction by October 31 this year, according to a news briefing of Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) Wednesday.

These projects involving aggregate investment of 114.7 billion yuan were expected to bring 930 million cubic meters of flood control capacity, 7.2 billion cubic meters of annual water supply capacity, 320,000 KW of power generation capacity and 0.563 million ha of effectively-irrigated land for China.

Wang Annan, deputy director of MWR's Planning and Programming said these projects cover river harnessing, water diversion, large reservoir and key water saving and irrigation canal networks were located in middle and west China.

In the first ten months, under-construction water conservancy projects completed 266.62 billion yuan of the central government's planned investment in the sector, up 67.2 percent from a year ago and 66.03 billion yuan investment went to key water conservancy projects, 2.6 times of the comparable investment in the same period of last year.

Meanwhile, 84 of the 172 water saving and supply as well as key water conservancy projects are being constructed this year, contributing over 800 billion yuan of investment in water conservancy projects.

In the next five years, several backbone projects of the 88 planned water conservancy programs such as the water diversion project in middle Yunnan Province have been approved. In 2016, 20 more key water conservancy projects with more than 800 billion yuan investment are preliminarily intended to start construction.
