On March 31, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the 6th Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Wang Yi expressed in his speech that the GMS economic cooperation has gone through the course of 25 years, and it has grown into a sub-region in Asia with the strongest dynamic and the best cooperation momentum. We should sum up experience and seize opportunities to break new ground in the development of sub-region, foster stronger economic growth, break a new path in tapping new sources of growth, and make growth more energized and efficient by riding the wave of innovation and change. We should build a more open cooperation form, continue driving trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, support the multilateral trading system and promote economic globalization to develop in an open, inclusive, universally beneficial, balanced, and win-win direction. We need to build a more interconnected network of connectivity. We should mainly boost key projects construction to fully release the potential of interconnectivity in boosting the economy and improving people’s lives. We need to deepen our partnership. We must uphold the principle of mutual respect, equal treatment, inclusiveness and mutual trust. We need to seek win-win and all-win outcomes in cooperation, and follow the path of common development and shared prosperity.
Wang Yi noted that according to the deployment made by the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, in the new era, China will make all-out efforts to pursue high-quality development, further deepen its reform and opening-up, and continue deepening mutually beneficial cooperation with its neighboring countries. GMS countries are natural partners in the construction and primary beneficiaries of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). We will promote the alignment of GMS cooperation and the BRI and realize interconnected development through coordinated actions. We should make the policy alignment a reality, tap the full potential of the economic corridors, strengthen economic and trade links and deepen people-to-people bonds, so as to build a more close-knit community of shared destiny in the sub-region and open up a brighter future for the development of sub-region.
