CHAIRMAN of Myanmar Investment Commission, National Security Advisor, Union Minister U Thaung Tun called on Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuetngor and discussed matters relating to promotion of trade and investment as well as to strengthen cooperation in various fields. In the meeting, the Union Minister underlined that he chose Hong Kong as first port of call in his capacity as a newly appointed Chairman to indicate that Myanmar attaches great importance to Hong Kong as its strategic partner to promote “responsible investment”.
He also met with the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Mr. Edward Yau and exchanged views on the Belt and Road Initiative and trade and investment opportunities under the framework ASEAN-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement.
The Union Minister had working lunch with Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of Bank of China in Hong Kong Mr. Gao Yingxin.
During the rest of his stay in Hong Kong, he will meet with Commissioner from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Mr. Xie Feng.
Chairman of MIC Union Minister U Thaung Tun, leading a 6 member delegation, has been in Hong Kong since 26 June to attend the 3rd Belt and Road Summit 2018 and related meetings organized by Hong Kong Trade Development Council from June 27 to 29.
The Belt and Road Summit, held in Hong Kong from 27 to 29 June 2018, was organized by Hong Kong Trade Development Council. It was attended by more than 5000 participants from Hong Kong, Macao and 55 countries including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, high ranking representatives from government, legislative council and private sector, Entrepreneurs, scholars and media.
Delivering a keynote speech at the Belt and Road Global Forum, Union Minister U Thaung Tun said “This gathering is an excellent opportunity for all of us to meet and learn more about the business opportunities before us and investment trends along the Belt and Road”.
The Union Minister discussed as a panelist at the Luncheon Plenary of the Belt and Road Summit, chaired by Mr. Edward Yau Tang-wah, Secretary of Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, together with Ministers and Deputy Ministers from Georgia, Britain and Cambodia. It was attended by more than 5000 participants from all over the world.
He spoke of how the government has taken significant steps to improve the business and investment environment in Myanmar and emphasized that:
“Myanmar is now open for business. MIC, under new management, will be transparent, take proactive approach and seek to promote responsible investment”
“business opportunities are still abundant and the critical need for foreign direct investment remains. For investors, these challenges can be turned into opportunities”
At the Belt and Road Summit, Union Minister delivered keynote speeches at Myanmar Investment Roundtable as well as Myanmar Promotion Seminar. He also underscored immerse business opportunities exist between Myanmar and Hong Kong.
