U Myo Min Aung, Vice President of Myanmar Retailer Association, urged the Government to regulate the online shopping industry with strong rules and regulations so that consumers and online shoppers owners can follow. He mentioned this at the regular meeting between Vice President of Myanmar and business leaders.

“In collaboration with other departments, we are working on a law to control online shopping industry,” U Myo Thu, Director of Consumers Affairs Department under the Ministry of Commerce, told Myanmar Business Today.

The Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Transport and Communication as well as other related ministries and UN agencies are working together for the regulation.

“When approved, the law can protect the consumers from fraud, help to settle disputes between the two parties and also help the industry grow which in turn help the online payments grow,” he added.

Moreover, because of unregulated e-commerce businesses, online shop owners should register so that disputes can be fairly settled.

To regulate online trading, the government is drafting an e-commerce law. Stakeholders point out that the laws on copyrights and distributor rights should include online shops’ products.
