U.S. dollar rises amid data

NEW YORK, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar rose in late trading on Wednesday as investors digested the latest economic data.

U.S. producer price index (PPI) rose 0.5 percent in January, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday.

U.S. housing starts dropped 3.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.567 million units last month, the Commerce Department said.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, increased 0.26 percent at 99.7064 in late trading.

In late New York trading, the euro was up to 1.0796 dollars from 1.0792 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound was down to 1.2918 dollars from 1.2999 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar fell to 0.6673 dollar from 0.6685 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 111.57 Japanese yen, higher than 109.87 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar was up to 0.9843 Swiss franc from 0.9828 Swiss franc, and it decreased to 1.3226 Canadian dollars from 1.3252 Canadian dollars.
