U.S. dollar gains amid safe-haven demand

NEW YORK, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar climbed in late trading on Wednesday as safe-haven demand increased amid a rapid rise in coronavirus infections in some U.S. states.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was up 0.21 percent at 97.1654.

In late New York trading, the euro decreased to 1.1229 U.S. dollars from 1.1271 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound decreased to 1.2537 dollars from 1.2577 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar decreased to 0.6890 U.S. dollar from 0.6893 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 107.09 Japanese yen, lower than 107.28 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar was up to 0.9496 Swiss franc from 0.9494 Swiss franc, and it was unchanged at close at 1.3567 Canadian dollars.
