Hong Kong stocks close 0.44 pct higher

Hong Kong stocks moved up 108.04 points, or 0.44 percent on Wednesday at 24,514.16 points. The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,420.95 and 24, 582.19. Turnover totaled 68.60 billion HK dollars (about 8.85 billion U.S. dollars).

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index ended up 50.92 points, or 0.46 percent, to close at 11,125.84. Two sub-indices gained ground with the Finance up 0.69 percent and the Commerce and Industry up 0.43 percent.

Two sub-indices lost ground with the Properties down 0.17 percent and the Utilities ending 0.52 percent lower. Banking giant HSBC, which accounts for the largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, edged up 1.86 percent to 71.25 HK dollars. Bank of East Asia, one of the largest local banks in Hong Kong, ended down 1.63 percent to 30.20 HK dollars.

Local bourse operator HKEX ended down 0.48 percent to 206.60 HK dollars. China Mobile, China's dominant mobile carrier, moved up 1.36 percent to 100.80 HK dollars, while another Chinese telecom giant China Unicom ended up 0.19 percent to 10.66 HK dollars.

For the local property stocks, Sun Hung Kai, one of HK's largest property developers by market value, ended up 0.34 percent 119.10 HK dollars. Hang Lung Properties fell 0.69 percent to 21.65 HK dollars. New World Development, another major developer in Hong Kong, increased 0.22 percent to 9.26 HK dollars.

As for mainland-based financial stocks, China Construction Bank, the country's second largest bank which accounts for the third largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, moved up 0.16 percent to 6.34 HK dollars. ICBC, the world's largest bank by market value, moved up 1.14 percent at 5.34 HK dollars. Bank of China ended down 0.24 percent to 4.21 HK dollars.

As for energy stocks, China's top refiner Sinopec ended up 1.04 percent to 5.83 HK dollars. PetroChina, the country's largest oil and gas producer, ended up 0.27 percent to 7.38 HK dollars. (1 U.S. dollar equals 7.75 HK dollars)
