Tokyo shares skyrocket after U.S. rate hike

Tokyo shares opened the trading Thursday sharply higher on a stronger U.S. dollar after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised the world's top economy's interest rates for the first time in over nine years. At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average skyrocketed 410.88 points, or 2.16 percent, from Wednesday to 19,460.79. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange jumped 30.97 points, or 2.01 percent, higher to 1,571.69.
