Tokyo shares opened the trading Thursday sharply higher following the yen's retreat and gains in the overnight U.S. stocks market. At 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average jumped 314.66 points, or 1.92 percent, higher from Wednesday to 16, 695.88. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 22.74 points, or 1.71 percent, to 1, 355.18.
