Tokyo shares closed Monday morning mixed as losses were offset due to pause in the yen's rise which was prompted earlier by weaker-than-expected U.S. growth data for the first quarter of fiscal 2016.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 81.22 points, or 0.49 percent, from Friday to 16,650.49. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 1.47 points, or 0.11 percent, to 1, 321.27.
Gainers were led by precision instrument, pharmaceutical and banking shares while decliners were led by brokerage, airline and marine transport issues.
