Tokyo shares closed Monday mixed, with early losses largely wiped out due to a pause in the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 66.50 points, or 0. 40 percent, from Friday at 16,635.77. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 0.91 point, or 0.07 percent lower at 1,321.83.
Gainers were led by bank, information and communication and pharmaceutical issues while decliners were led by brokerage, airline and marine transport shares. The day's turnover was about 2,486.7 billion yen (around 24.26 billion U.S. dollars).
