Tokyo stocks opened marginally higher Monday tracking Wall Street's advance at the end of last week after speeches by U.S. Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen and European Central Bank President Mario Draghi at a meeting of central bankers in the United States brought no surprises.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 17.83 points, or 0.09 percent, from Friday to 19,470.44.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 2.32 points, or 0.15 percent, to 1,599.31.
Pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, and construction-related issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes of trade.
