U.S. stocks close mixed after earnings reports

U.S. stocks ended mixed on Thursday, with the Dow closing at a record high, as investors were digesting the latest earnings reports.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 140.67 points, or 0.54 percent, to 26,392.79. The S&P 500 increased 1.71 points, or 0.06 percent, to 2,839.25. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 3.89 points, or 0.05 percent, to 7,411.16.

U.S. construction machinery and equipment company Caterpillar said on Thursday that its fourth-quarter adjusted profit was 2.16 U.S. dollars a share, topping market expectations of 1.77 U.S. dollars a share.

The company's stock rose four percent in pre-market trading before losing 0.41 percent in late trading.

U.S. manufacturing company 3M on Thursday also reported earnings and revenue that beat market expectations. The company's stock rose 1.89 percent and closed at 252.36 U.S. dollars per share.

As of Thursday, 77 percent of the S&P 500 companies that had reported surpassed earnings expectations, while 79 percent of those companies had beaten sales estimates, according to U.S. financial information company FactSet.
