Tokyo stocks closed lower on Friday, erasing earlier gains as investor consternation grew ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's speech expected later in the day at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 37.61 points, or 0.16 percent, from Thursday to finish the day at 23,631.88, marking its lowest closing level since Jan. 4.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 5.17 points, or 0.27 percent, to close at 1,879.39.

Mining, insurance and bank-oriented issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
