Tokyo stocks closed mixed Wednesday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index falling on continued concerns over U.S.-triggered trade tensions which sent Wall Street lower overnight and set a negative tone for trading.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 68.50 points, or 0.31 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 21,717.04.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 0.45 point, or 0.03 percent, to finish at 1,693.25.
By the close of play, notable issues that advanced comprised oil and coal product, mining, and warehousing, while electric appliance, miscellaneous product and machinery-linked issues led those that declined.
