Weaker than expected earnings posted by major New Zealand companies continued to lead New Zealand shares' fall on Wednesday as the S&P/NZX 50 index decreased 0.45 percent to 9,281.

Due to reduced power generation, Contact Energy dipped 2.33 percent to 6.28 NZ dollars (4.33 U.S. dollars).

However, Foley Wines, a major producer, marketer and distributor of handmade wines, rose 6.45 percent to 1.65 NZ dollars after reporting a significant lift in operating earnings as sales continued to improve.
