Tokyo stocks open sharply higher tracking overnight gains on Wall Street

TOKYO, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Wednesday, tracking solid gains on Wall Street overnight, as investor confidence returned after U.S. Federal Reserve officials hinted that interests rates would be cut if the economy required.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 297.29 points, or 1.46 percent, from Tuesday to 20,705.83.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 21.60 points, or 1.44 percent, at 1,520.69.

All industry categories on the main section advanced into positive territory, with machinery, metal product and marine transportation-linked issues comprising those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
