Chinese shares close higher Thursday

BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices closed higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.16 percent, at 2,909.87 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.61 percent higher at 9,746.56 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 387.8 billion yuan (about 55.33 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 359.3 billion yuan in the previous trading day.

Most stocks gained, with gainers outnumbering losers by 803 to 556 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,344 to 669 in Shenzhen.

Companies in wireless earphone and chip sectors posted strong performances, with stocks of Shenzhen Fenda Technology Co.,Ltd., an electroacoustic product company, surging by the daily 10-percent limit to close at 4.58 yuan per share.

Shares in the industries of planting, port shipping and banking led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.64 percent to close at 1,692.58 points Thursday.
