The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 31.33 points, or 0.11 percent, to 28,036.22. The S&P 500 rose 1.57 points, or 0.05 percent, to 3,122.03. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 9.11 points, or 0.11 percent, to 8,549.94.
Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors closed higher, with consumer staples and real estate up 0.54 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively, leading the advancers. Energy closed down 1.33 percent, the worst-performing group.
On the data front, a monthly gauge of U.S. homebuilder confidence slipped slightly this month.
Builder confidence in the market for newly-built single-family homes fell one point to 70 in November, according to the latest National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) released Monday.
U.S. equities extended gains last week as investors were optimistic about the progress of U.S.-China trade talks.
For the past week, the Dow was up 1.17 percent, the S&P 500 increased 0.89 percent, and the Nasdaq gained 0.77 percent.
