NEW YORK, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks finished higher on Monday after volatile trading as Wall Street is waiting for more updates concerning global trade.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 31.33 points, or 0.11 percent, to 28,036.22. The S&P 500 rose 1.57 points, or 0.05 percent, to 3,122.03. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 9.11 points, or 0.11 percent, to 8,549.94.

Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors closed higher, with consumer staples and real estate up 0.54 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively, leading the advancers. Energy closed down 1.33 percent, the worst-performing group.

On the data front, a monthly gauge of U.S. homebuilder confidence slipped slightly this month.

Builder confidence in the market for newly-built single-family homes fell one point to 70 in November, according to the latest National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) released Monday.

U.S. equities extended gains last week as investors were optimistic about the progress of U.S.-China trade talks.

For the past week, the Dow was up 1.17 percent, the S&P 500 increased 0.89 percent, and the Nasdaq gained 0.77 percent.
