NEW YORK, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday as investors digested a batch of economic data.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 31.27 points, or 0.11 percent, to 28,267.16. The S&P 500 increased 1.07 points, or 0.03 percent, to 3,192.52. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 9.13 points, or 0.10 percent, to 8,823.36.

U.S. private-owned housing starts in November rose 3.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.365 million units, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Tuesday.

The housing starts were boosted by lower mortgage rates and supported by the broader economy, analysts said.

The number of job openings rose by 235,000 to 7.3 million on the last business day of October, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

The largest increases in job openings levels were in retail trade, finance and insurance, and durable goods manufacturing, according to the bureau's report.

The largest decreases in job openings were in nondurable goods manufacturing, information, and arts, entertainment, and recreation, the report showed.
