BEIJING, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.51 percent, at 2,890.49 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.10 percent higher at 10,728.46 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 885.8 billion yuan (about 126.8 billion U.S. dollars), down from about 929.59 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Gainers outnumbered losers by 1,169 to 297 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,642 to 513 in Shenzhen.
Shares in medical waste treatment sector led the gains with East China Engineering Science and Technology Co.,Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent.
Investors are also taking a shine to agricultural company stocks, with Beijing Dabeinong Technology Group Co.,Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent. China's central authorities last Wednesday released this year's "No. 1 central document", an indicator of policy priorities, focusing on agriculture, rural areas and farmers' issues for the 17th consecutive year.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.31 percent to close at 2,042.18 points Monday.
