TOKYO, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The benchmark Nikkei stock index opened higher Wednesday, tracking gains on Wall Street overnight, as further upbeat economic data showing an increase in U.S. consumer confidence helped offset ongoing concerns over business closures hampering the global economic recovery amid a resurgence in COVID-19 cases.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 37.52 points, or 0.17 percent, from Tuesday to 22,325.66.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 1.07 points, or 0.07 percent, at 1,557.70.

Security houses and nonferrous metal-oriented issues comprised those that advanced the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
