BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 4.5 percent to 3,210.1 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 5.37 percent lower at 12,996.34 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.51 trillion yuan (about 216 billion U.S. dollars), down from 1.57 trillion yuan the previous trading day.
Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,426 to 70 on the Shanghai bourse and 2,063 to 139 in Shenzhen.
Shares related to liquor, tourism and semiconductor sectors led the losses, with shares of the leading liquor maker Kweichow Moutai Co., Ltd. down 7.9 percent to 1,614 yuan.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 5.93 percent to close at 2,646.26 points.
