TOKYO, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened essentially flat Tuesday morning following a mixed lead from Wall Street overnight, with the tech heavy Nasdaq Composite Index gaining ground and supporting technology shares here.

Concerns over a deadlocked, yet vital virus-linked stimulus package in the United States have heightened as both chambers of U.S. Congress may not reconvene until mid-September.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 8.26 points, or 0.04 percent, from Monday to 23,088.49.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 1.63 points, or 0.10 percent, at 1,608.19.

Pharmaceutical, textile and apparel, and food issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
