TOKYO, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed mixed on Friday as upbeat sentiment over the development of vaccines was offset by concerns over surging COVID-19 cases in Japan.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 43.28 points, or 0.16 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 26,763.39.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged up 0.66 point, or 0.04 percent, higher to finish at 1,793.24.

Rubber product and real estate issues led notable decliners, while precision instrument and air transportation issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
