The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.3 percent lower at 13,495.72 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 775.7 billion yuan (about 118.29 billion U.S. dollars), up from 694.5 billion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares related to Hainan free trade port, electricity and steel saw strong performances, while those related to phosphorus chemical and paper-making industries led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.28 percent to close at 2,719.95 points.
