TOKYO, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed slightly higher Friday as U.S. retail sales data for March beat expectations further fueling hopes for an economic recovery, although rising COVID-19 cases in Japan and more prefectures granted tougher virus measures weighed on the mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 40.68 points, or 0.14 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 29,683.37.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 1.74 points, or 0.09 percent, to finish at 1,960.87.

Mining, insurance and air transportation issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
