The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.24 percent lower at 14,653.82 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 997.3 billion yuan (about 156 billion U.S. dollars), down from 1 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares related to the medical equipment sector led the gains, while those related to the electricity sector led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.4 percent to close at 3,281.9 points Wednesday.
