The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.62 percent lower at 12,244.5 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices came in at 1.11 trillion yuan (about 175.7 billion U.S. dollars), up from 1.02 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Stocks related to precious metals led the gains, while those related to COVID-19 treatment led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.8 percent to close at 2,582.99 points.
