The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.37 percent higher at 11,250.06 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 806.7 billion yuan (about 119 billion U.S. dollars), up from 770.3 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Most of the stocks gained on Thursday, with those related to the photovoltaic industry and wind power led the gains. Shares of e-commerce, oil and gas exploitation and Baijiu (a type of Chinese liquor) suffered heavy losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.5 percent to close at 2,377.13 points Thursday.
