China on Monday congratulated Chairman of Nepal's Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) Khadga Prashad Oli on becoming prime minister of Nepal.

"We believe Prime Minister Oli will lead the Nepali government and people to achieve new progress in national unity, stability and development," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying at a regular press briefing. Oli was elected the country's 38th prime minister through a parliamentary vote on Sunday afternoon.

Hua said China highly valued its ties with Nepal, and respected the social system and development path that the Nepali people had chosen for themselves.

Further, China supports the country's efforts to maintain independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. China hopes to make joint efforts with Nepal to boost bilateral all-round cooperative partnership, she said.
