China working on rules with environ. pollution liability insurance

Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) has drafted a guidance to expand the pilot grogram of environmental pollution liability insurance, said Shen Xiaoyue, an official with the Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy under the MEP on Thursday

. In 2007, China introduced the pilot program on environmental pollution liability insurance in heavy metals, petrochemical, hazardous chemicals, hazardous waste treatment, power generation, medicine, printing and dyeing fields.

The insurance scheme is compulsory to heavy metal companies and other two kinds of enterprises. By November 2015, relevant premium from 11 provinces and municipalities totaled 70 million yuan with underwriting amount of 3.6 billion yuan.
