New Chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) U Htay Oo was defeated in Sunday's general election, the Office of the USDP confirmed Monday.
U Htay Oo, who is current parliamentarian, lost to his rival U Khin Maung Yi of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) in the election run for re-seeking a seat of the House of Representatives.
U Htay Oo ran the election in Hinthada township constituency in Ayeyawaddy region. So far, a number of leaders of Myanmar's ruling party and current ministers were initially reported lost by local media in Sunday's general election, while NLD is leading as winner of the election.
The election result is expected to be officially released by the Union Election Commission later on Monday successively. USDP fed 1,122 candidates, while NLD fielded 1,123 in running the election. A total of 6,038 candidates involving 91 political parties and 310 independent runners competed for more than 1,000 seats at three levels of the parliament in the election.
