Tokyo stocks dropped Tuesday as a circumspect market mood saw investors in a risk averse mood ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting Wednesday as a hike in its key interest rate in the U.S. could have a significant bearing on emerging economies.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 317.52 points, or 1.68 percent, from Monday to a near two month low at 18,565.90, while the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 25.33 points, or 1.66 percent, to finish the day at 1,502.55.

The day's notable decliners comprised pulp and paper, banks and miscellaneous products and the turnover for the day was 2,280.6 billion yen (18.85 billion U.S. dollars).
