Austria will provide almost 60 million euros (65 million U.S. dollars) in aid to Syria in 2016, the Federal Chancellery told the Austria Press Agency on Friday. The news comes ahead of Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann's attendance at a Syria donors' conference in London next week.
The funding will primarily go to the EU's Regional Trust Fund in response to the Syrian Crisis (Madad Fund), the UN Refugee Agency, and the World Food Programme. The chancellery stated on behalf of Faymann that the funding "will be an important measure in reducing refugee numbers." Faymann also plans to use the conference to address the issue of the migrant crisis in Europe, as well as to meet with counterparts such as British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
