Tokyo shares open sharply higher over upbeat U.S. economy data

Tokyo shares opened the trading Monday sharply higher as investors' sentiment was spurred by gains in the Wall Street and upbeat U.S. retail sales data. At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average skyrocketed 644.90 points, or 4.31 percent, from Friday to 15,597.51. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 61.35 points, or 5.13 percent, to 1, 257.63.
